Littlenobody FABLES | LUMA Black Cat – Armature Puppet Build – EARS

CHAT had a lot to say about the blog post, heres their input –

With the face largely established, the next stage focuses on one of the defining features of LUMA’s silhouette: the ears. Their size, angle and construction all influence how expressive the finished character will appear.

As with every stage of the build, the objective is to create reliable character references that support SORA 2 throughout production.

Building the Ear Structure

The ears are constructed around lightweight supports before being covered with fabric and fur.

This stage explores:

  • Overall ear proportions
  • Internal support structure
  • Ear positioning
  • Balance between realism and stylisation
  • Integration with the head sculpt

Working with Fur

Adding fur introduces new challenges. Direction of the nap, seam placement and volume all affect the final shape of the character.

Several test assemblies help determine the cleanest construction before committing to permanent assembly.

Strengthening the Character Silhouette

Even before facial details are visible, the ears define LUMA’s outline.

Creating a recognisable silhouette is particularly important for animation, allowing the character to remain identifiable from a distance or in silhouette.

Looking Ahead

With the ears complete, the remaining work centres on applying fur across the body and bringing together all of the individual components into a complete puppet.

Conclusion

Although relatively small components, the ears dramatically influence LUMA’s personality. They complete the character’s silhouette and bring greater cohesion to the overall design.
